Perdido Key is one of a series of barrier islands along the Gulf of Mexico. Aproximately 63% of the island is left in it's natural state. This is a large percentage considering the popularity of beach condos and developments. A large part of the beaches of Perdido Key are the Gulf Islands National Seashore and .Perdido Key State Recreational Areas. First along the beach highway that runs east out of Orange Beach is the area called Alabama Point. The waves occasionally are big enough right at that area for surfing. When that is the case, the local TV newscasters mention it and surfers quickly show up from as far away as Birmingham.
The entrance to the eastern most Perdido Key Gulf of Mexico beaches at Alabama Point has a nice parking lot.
